Am I the only one who hates shark week regardless? It's just... why sharks?

It started off as a media push when someone realized "Hey, everyone has a bunch of misconceptions about sharks." Knowing that there's a market for making people go "Wow! I never knew that!" it quickly became a thing. This is because of the prevalence of Jaws, and the cultural osmosis that kept people from knowing what was fake about that movie, sometimes attributing its tropes to real life.

What resulted was actually one of the purest forms of documentary and informational TV at the time, and it got people for 1 week to look away from "fake" TV (this was before reality TV really caught on, most popular TV were sitcoms or dramas) and go to "real" TV. It was never intended to last more than 1 week, but now they revisit it annually.

Now it's just a cash grab for wanna-be nerds. Still a popular thing for kids though, because of the unique place that movies like Jaws have given Sharks. But because it's sort of become this cultural icon, it can now guarantee a return on money (and become a bankable business prospect no matter how outdated or stupid it gets) simply because of the brand name it has created.

I used to like it. But it seems like the last couple of years, they ran out of relevant stuff to talk about.

Now, it's just a twitter marketing campaign with some mediocre and/or fake documentaries, and a metric crapton of reruns.

And what used to be educational and promote conserving top-tier predators is now the same BS and sensationalism that they were fighting. I don't watch much TV, so I'm not too attached, but this shift away from informative programming that all the "educational" channels have undergone is super depressing.

It's survival of the fittest, though. Wikipedia, youtube, and google have provided far better educational resources at a far cheaper cost than Discovery Channel ever could. Now the only surviving Discovery Channel shows are bottom-feeders that survive off of other animals who can't change with the times.
